Christopher R. Cox

Christopher R. Cox is a recovering newspaper journalist of nearly 20 years who has embarked on a full-time regimen of freelance writing, Larium, and Third World travel. Previously he worked as a staff feature reporter for daily newspapers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Lowell and Boston, Massachusetts. His work, which was nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize, received multiple national and regional awards. Most recently his features were honored at the National Press Club by the Eric Friedheim Travel Journalism Awards, in Hong Kong by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards, and by Singapore's World Gourmet Summit.

He is also the author of the critically acclaimed adventure-travel book, Chasing the Dragon: Into the Heart of the Golden Triangle (Henry Holt & Co., 1996; Owl Books, 1997), about Burma’s narco-warlords, and also contributed travels-from-hell dispatches to two recent Lonely Planet anthologies, Tales from Nowhere (2006) and By the Seat of My Pants (2005).

His feature stories have appeared in numerous national and international magazines, including Travel + Leisure, Audubon, Outside, Men’s Journal, Caribbean Travel & Life, ESPN: The Magazine, Popular Mechanics, DestinAsian and Reader’s Digest.

After a Navy-brat childhood that deployed him to Hawaii, Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and the Panama Canal Zone, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a track scholarship and graduated with a B.A. in English education. He also received an M.A. in English from McGill University, which he attended on a Rotary Foundation fellowship, and an M.L.S. from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge, where he was a Nettie P. Wilson Scholar.

When not flying economy-class he lives in Acton, Massachusetts.
